The wait for mango lovers has been longer than usual this year. A punishing summer with prolonged heatwaves has delayed harvests and reduced yields across key mango-growing regions . But as the season finally picks up, Chennai’s organic farms and markets are bringing a diverse, carefully grown crop to the city.
From tree-ripened Banganapalli to rare varieties like Kalapadi and Suvarnarekha, here is where you can source organic mangoes this summer.
Hanu Reddy Farms: Tree-ripened Banganapalli
Located in Othivakkam near Guduvanchery, Hanu Reddy Raghava Farms is a 70-year-old mango orchard known for its Banganapalli variety, grown from saplings originally sourced from Kadiam in Andhra Pradesh .
What sets their produce apart is the ripening process. “We allow the mangoes to ripen on the tree. So it’s almost 95% mature when we cut it. From the time we harvest it to when you eat it is only a three to four-day period,” says Nirupama Reddy, COO .
However, this year’s crop is delayed and reduced. “The fruiting is not so much because of climate change. It’s not just our farm, everywhere people are saying the same thing,” she adds .

Ponfarm Organic: Three varieties, staggered harvest
After two difficult seasons, Ponfarm Organic is expecting a steadier year with an estimated yield of eight to ten tonnes . The farm grows Banganapalli, Imam Pasand, and Sendhura, with Banganapalli forming the bulk of the harvest.
For over a decade, Ponfarm has followed organic practices using panchgavya to ward off pests. Harvesting is done daily after observing the fruits. “We tell customers to buy small quantities as it can be stored only for three to four days,” says S Ganesh, who runs the farm .

Organic Shandy: Over 6,000 trees
Founded in 1998 as one of Chennai’s earliest organic marketplaces, Organic Shandy runs the Punnamai Orchard in Cheyyur, spanning 70 acres with over 6,000 trees . The farm grows Alphonso, Banganapalli, Imam Pasand, and a small quantity of Rumani.
PB Murali, co-founder, notes that this year’s season has been marked by unpredictability. “We had some flowering even in February, then it failed. Now they are getting a new flowering, which is very strange,” he says .
At Organic Shandy, prices are expected to stabilise between ₹70 and ₹100 per kilogram at peak season. Mangoes can be ordered directly from their Mylapore store.
Cholayil Farm: Close to 20 varieties
At Cholayil Farm to Table, variety is the defining feature. Spread across 90 acres with over 2,000 trees, the farm grows close to 20 types of mangoes, including Imam Pasand, Malgova, Neelam, Kalapadi, and lesser-seen varieties like Suvarnarekha .
“People are more willing now to try different types than just Banganapalli,” says co-founder Susmera Cholayil . The farm follows fully organic practices using panchagavya, neem-based solutions, and bio compost.

Organic Farmers Market: Mangoes from multiple farms
At Organic Farmers Market (OFM), the mango season arrives in fragments from different farms. The shelves typically carry Banganapalli, Imam Pasand, Alphonso, Sendhura, and native varieties like Kalapadi and Jawari .
OFM largely stocks mature, unripe mangoes rather than fully tree-ripened fruit. “Transporting a ripened mango is very difficult, so we ask farmers to send mature mangoes and customers can control the ripening at home,” an OFM representative explains .
Mangoes are available at their Adyar store and OFM markets across the city.
Organic mango feast at Cook Gramam
For those who prefer to eat rather than cook, Cook Gramam, an organic fine-dining restaurant in Anna Nagar, hosted a limited-time “Mango Sangamam – A Seasonal Table – Organic Mango Feast” celebrating India’s mango harvest . The menu showcased organically sourced mango varieties in a traditional Tamil-style meal, from starters to desserts .

What to expect this season
Early season organic mangoes are currently retailing between ₹120 and ₹220 per kilogram depending on variety, quality, and source, with sellers expecting rates to stabilise as arrivals improve through June .
