Getting an agricultural loan in India has become easier and more affordable. The government aims to make credit accessible to every farmer, with over ₹30 lakh crore disbursed in 2025-26 . The Kisan Credit Card (KCC) is the backbone of farm credit, providing a simple, composite facility for all your farming needs .

1. Understand Your Primary Option: The Kisan Credit Card (KCC)

The KCC scheme, regulated by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), is the most important tool for farmers . It’s a revolving credit facility valid for up to six years, covering crop cultivation and allied activities like dairy, fisheries, and poultry .

Key Features:

  • Flexible Credit: Withdraw funds as needed for working capital, post-harvest expenses, and consumption .
  • No Collateral: No security or margin required for loans up to ₹2 lakh. For loans against crop hypothecation, the limit can be ₹3 lakh .
  • Low Interest: Loans up to ₹3 lakh are available at just 7%. If you repay on time, you get a 3% Prompt Repayment Incentive (PRI), making the effective rate only 4% .

How Much Can You Get?

Your credit limit is based on the “Scale of Finance” (SoF) fixed by the State Level Technical Committee for your crops and area .

ComponentPercentage/Derivation
Scale of Finance (SoF)x Extent of cultivation
Post-harvest & Consumption+10% of SoF
Maintenance & Tech Services+20% of SoF
Insurance PremiumsActual cost (if applicable)

For a practical example, see the RBI’s official KCC illustration .

Who is Eligible?

You are eligible if you are an individual farmer, a tenant farmer, or a sharecropper. Self-Help Groups (SHGs) and Joint Liability Groups (JLGs) are also eligible .

2. Don’t Have Land? Consider Flexi KCC

The new RBI directions provide for a Flexi KCC for marginal farmers with land up to one hectare. Banks can offer a flexible credit limit of ₹10,000 to ₹50,000 based on their assessment of your needs .

3. Apply for Investment Credit (Long-Term Loans)

Beyond working capital, the KCC also covers long-term investment credit for purposes like :

  • Land development and minor irrigation
  • Purchase of tractors, farm equipment, or fishing boats
  • Construction of animal sheds or purchase of livestock

For example, banks like Indian Bank offer tractor loans requiring minimum landholding (e.g., 4 acres irrigated) and are secured by hypothecation of the asset and mortgage of land .

4. Explore Other Government Support Schemes

While the KCC is the primary credit channel, these other schemes support your farming business:

SchemeKey Benefit
Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi (PM-KISAN)Income support of ₹6,000 per year in three instalments .
Modified Interest Subvention Scheme (MISS)Ensures the 4% effective interest rate on KCC loans up to ₹3 lakh .
Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana (PMFBY)Crop insurance against natural calamities, often financed through your KCC .

5. How to Apply and Secure Your Loan

  1. Approach Your Bank: Visit your nearest commercial bank, regional rural bank, or cooperative bank.
  2. Fill the Application: The Kisan Credit Card application form has been simplified .
  3. Submit Documents: You will need:
    • Land records/tenancy certificate or an affidavit if you are a sharecropper (for loans up to ₹50,000) .
    • Aadhaar and e-KYC are mandatory for interest subvention benefits .
  4. Complete Aadhaar Authentication: This is mandatory for receiving the interest subvention .
