In the southern reaches of Tamil Nadu, a quiet entrepreneurial revolution is taking root. Known for its verdant landscapes and rich agricultural bounty, Theni is emerging as a fertile ground for startups. Combining the region’s traditional agricultural strengths with modern technology and robust institutional support, the district is proving that innovation can flourish far from the glitz of metropolitan hubs .

A recent social media post highlighting that Theni is home to over 150 startups ignited significant discussion, but the reality on the ground suggests the numbers may be even higher. Vasanthan Selvam, CEO of the Entrepreneurship Development Institute of India (EDII) Periyakulam Horti Business Incubation Forum, estimates that the district is nurturing about 200 startups, with a resounding 80% being agri-based and the rest tech-driven .

A Hub of Agri-Innovation

The success of Theni’s startup ecosystem is deeply intertwined with its agricultural identity. “Theni is a fertile ground for startups that combines tech and agriculture. We have a hundred-plus problems, like mechanisation in deseeding of tamarind pods, paddy seed treatment, harvesting of coconuts… the list is long,” says Vasanthan Selvam. The EDII forum is actively seeking entrepreneurs who have an “inclination to solve these problems” .

Success Stories from the Soil

From Loss to Leadership: Gautam Das’s Milky Mushroom Venture

Gautam Das’s journey is a testament to the power of incubation. After incurring a loss of about ₹20 lakh in milky mushroom cultivation, he was on the verge of giving up. The EDII provided crucial hand-holding, helping him transform his failure into a highly successful startup. He now sells his cultivation modules, offers training, and operates a customised, fully automated unit on a pre-incubation centre leased from EDII .

The ‘Brownie Girl’ of Theni: Nidhya Muthukrishnan

During the pandemic, Nidhya Muthukrishnan began baking fresh cream cakes on her terrace in a small setup called ‘paistree’. The turning point came when she connected with EDII. “A meeting that changed the way I looked at my business,” she recalls. With mentorship, she learned the importance of branding and packaging, and her healthy, preservative-free brownies made with millet earned her the sobriquet ‘brownie girl’. She has since launched her own food truck, ‘Nila treat’ .

A Farm Worker Brews a Billion-Dollar Idea: Renuga’s Betel Soda

Renuga, a 38-year-old agricultural labourer from Sivapuram, defied all odds to become an award-winning entrepreneur. Armed with a seventh-grade education, she innovated a refreshing, sugar-free soda from betel leaves, a product she named ‘Mr Green’. With the support of a PM Formalisation of Micro Food Processing Enterprises Scheme loan and training from KVK, Renuga now earns a stable monthly income and has applied for a patent, aiming for international markets .

Nature’s Bounty: Akathiya Naturals

Nithya Rajapandi from Bodinayakanur transformed her personal care product business, Akathiya Naturals, into a roaring success. Her products are now exported to the United States, aided by EDII’s crucial guidance on getting drug and cosmetic licences, marketing, and export guidance .

The Ecosystem Enablers

The success stories are not accidental; they are the result of a robust support system.

The EDII Incubation Forum: Functioning under the Horticulture College and Research Institute (HCRI), Periyakulam, the EDII forum has been the cornerstone of this ecosystem since 2018. It offers a comprehensive package to aspiring entrepreneurs:

  • Seed Funding: Initial financial support of up to ₹2 lakh for viable ideas .
  • Infrastructure: Startups can rent or lease fully equipped pre-incubation and co-working spaces .
  • Mentorship: The institute provides relentless hand-holding, helping startups pitch their products, perfect their marketing, and navigate licensing and validation .
  • Legacy of Support: The district administration, under former Collector R.V. Shajeevana, actively encouraged young entrepreneurs to participate in government exhibitions, giving them valuable exposure .

KVK and Government Schemes: Institutions like ICAR-KVK Theni provide vital training in food processing and value addition, inspiring entrepreneurs and organizing monthly meets to foster networking . Government schemes like the PM FME provide crucial financial support, as seen in Renuga’s case .

A Multisectoral Approach

Tamil Nadu’s overall startup growth reflects a multisectoral strategy. The state has grown from just 2,000 to over 10,000 startups in four years, with a focus on a “rich mix” of sectors, including agriculture, space, and deep-tech . In Theni, this approach is visible in the blend of agri-tech, food processing, and value-added product businesses .

With a talent pool among the top 10 in Asia and a strategic focus on tier-2 and tier-3 cities, Theni is a model for how localized problems can lead to global solutions . As Vasanthan Selvam sums up, the district offers a unique opportunity for anyone who wants to be an entrepreneur by solving real-world problems, right where they live .
